As we reported earlier this week, the UK Government have today formally announced that as of December, travellers arriving in the UK from non-exempt countries will be able to take a private test on day 5 of quarantine and with a negative result, allowed to leave quarantine.
The present rules require a returning traveller from a country that isn’t on the ‘safe travel corridor list’ to self-quarantine for 14 days with no option of a test to reduce the period. Under new rules, its feasible that a traveller using a fast turnaround private test may only need to quarantine for 5 days.
The new procedure will come into place in England on Tuesday 15th December 2020. Grant Shapps, the Secretary of State for Transport said “The introduction of this programme has only been made possible with the evolution of the science and understanding of this virus. We’ve taken the time to put the right system in place, ensuring we keep the British public safe.”
Private COVID-19 tests are available presently from a range of private companies, with prices around £100, with Gatwick Airport allowing travellers to pay just £60 for a test onsite. It’s likely that the average test price will fall dramatically from January as they become more frequent and common to allow travel and larger scale events inline with the new Government announcements and roll out of the vaccine.
We will be updating our travel pages with further details about this new scheme throughout the day.
